After Solomon died, his sons fought for the throne and a civil war broke out. Solomon had given his blessing to Rehoboam to be the new king.The ten tribes of the North rebel against the house of David and withdraw their support of the king, Rehoboam. Jeroboam claimed to be God's chosen king and took over the northern half and kept the name Israel. Rehoboam took over the southern half of the country and called it "Judah".
